Pest prevention tactics can range anywhere from harsh chemicals to a good ‘ol shoe, but did you know that there are several natural ways that you can keep pests at bay? Believe it or not, a plant or two in your yard (and even in your home) can work wonders at preventing some of the nastiest pests out there today. Join us today, as we go over some of these plants, which will make for a fantastic addition to your home—both in terms of aesthetic and practicality.
The first plant on our list is basil. Basil, as we all know, is a staple in most kitchens thanks to its flavor, but it also has the power to keep flies and mosquitoes away. While the smell of the plant alone should be enough, you can also make a super-effective insect repellant spray by using fresh basil. Simply pour 4 ounces of boiling water into a container filled with basil leaves, leave to steep, add in 4 ounces of vodka, and refrigerate. Spray whenever you go outside to keep mosquitoes and flies off for good!
Our next pest-deterring plant on the list is yet another common household staple: mint. Fresh mint is delicious in iced tea and many recipes, and works wonders at repelling mosquitoes. A simple pot indoors or out is all you need to give your home a fresh mosquito-barrier. However, do make sure that you use potted mint, as mint that is regularly planted in the ground can spread like wildfire.
In addition to our previous two entries, bay leaves double as a highly-potent fly repellent. This cuisine staple gives off flavor and aroma that is pleasant to us, but repulsive to the fly. Keep them indoors or out for an all-natural way to protect your home!
By choosing to utilize the natural qualities of these herbs, not only are you benefitting from keeping bugs away, but also the convenience of having fresh herbs at your fingertips. Cooking and pest defense were never easier.
