Wacky Pest Wednesday: Weevils

 In News

Good Wednesday to you, Tri-County Pest Control fans, and welcome to our new edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday! This week, we will be covering the weevil.

Weevils are small, beetle-like creatures, that tend to become more prevalent as the weather gets warmer. Most weevils are found outside in fields, gardens, and orchards, but there are some that will want to invade your pantry to feed on the foodstuff inside. Generally, when weevils enter the home, they do so in brigades, bringing massive quantities along with them.

However, few weevils will enter the home from the outside; if you find yourself with a weevil infestation, chances are that they were lying in wait in food that you purchased from the store. Weevils are usually found in flour or rice, as they eat their way into the containers before or after shipment to the store. To prevent a weevil infestation, make sure that when purchasing flour or rice that there are no holes in the packaging, and that your home is equipped with proper weather stripping.

Weevils have been a common pest for centuries; even the pirates had their fair encounter with them. If a pirate ship had been at sea for months on end, chances are that the food supply left was infested with weevils. Since protein is hard to come by on the open seas, you can take a guess to what a pirate’s favorite snack was when running low on supplies.

So there you have it, a little bit of fun fact on the weevil to help get you through the rest of the week. We’ll see you next week for another edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday!
