Wacky Pest Wednesday: Fruit Fly

 In News

Happy Wednesday to all you Tri-County Pest Control fans out there, and welcome to our latest edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday!  Today, we invite you to join us today as we cover one of the smallest pests out there: the fruit fly.

Fruit flies are, next to the cockroach and the ant, one of the most infamous pests out there.  Like the other two in that category, fruit flies can be extremely difficult to remove once you see them in your home.  Sure, you may be able to swat down a few with a rolled-up piece of newspaper, but that won’t stop the infestation. No, these are pretty tricky critters to get rid of because they are masters of resourcefulness and hiding in plain sight.

So, if they’re such a pain to get rid of, then you may start to think that the best way to deal with an infestation is to prevent one from happening in the first place.  We always say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that doubly counts in this situation. Fruit flies make their way into homes by riding in on pieces of fruit you’re bringing back or by coming in through a door that’s been left open for too long.  However, that pales in comparison to how fast they’ll infest your home if you have overripe fruit and a window that’s been cracked open for a little bit too long. Once inside, they’ll make a meal out of your fermenting fruit and within days they will lay hundreds of eggs, and in a few days after that your fruit fly infestation will absolutely be noticeable.  So yes, prevention is the best course of action here. Keep your doors closed, wash off fruit when you bring it back, and if you want to leave your windows open, make sure you have a screen that’s completely intact.

Did you know that we can give credit to the fruit fly for many scientific advances?  Turns out, these flies have a pretty diverse gene pool, making them the best specimen to use for genetic research.

A fruit fly infestation can seem like the worst thing on Earth, but never fear, as the professionals at Tri-County Pest Control are here to help.  If you notice fruit flies buzzing around your home, give us a call, and we’ll be there in no time to help.
