Wacky Pest Wednesday: Dragonflies

 In News

Another happy Wednesday to all you Tri-County Pest Control fans out there, and welcome to our latest edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday!  Please join us today as we cover a critter that we’re sure that you’ve already seen this season: the dragonfly!

Dragonflies may certainly look menacing, but when you break it down, there isn’t much to worry about.  Sure, they have some big eyes, a weird looking body, and an almost fearless aptitude to fly right around your face, but despite all of this they are one of the most beneficial insects out there.  Thanks to their insatiable appetite for mosquitoes, dragonflies do a wonder to control the pest population—to the tune of eating 30 to hundreds of mosquitoes per day. Now, talk about an eating spree!

Whenever a dragonfly zooms around your face, just take comfort in knowing that they are not out to get you.  Even if we assume that they are malicious (which they are anything but!) they don’t even have the ability to cause harm to you.  That being said, dragonflies really put the truth to the statement that you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Did you know that scientists believe that the dragonfly is the first winged insect?  Fossils found of prehistoric dragonflies date back to 300 million years, where your average dragonfly has a wingspan of about 2 feet, which pales in comparison to their current wingspan of around 2-5 inches.  How’s that for wacky!

However, with all that being said, the buzzing of a dragonfly can be a bit annoying, especially on humid days or worse, if they are able to get inside your house.  Should that happen, feel free to give us a call—we’ll be there in no time to get the critter out, and send it on its way toward a lovely mosquito feast.
