Wacky Pest Wednesday: Stink Bug
Happy Wednesday, Tri-County Pest Control fans, and welcome to our latest edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday! Join us today as we go over a very stinky and funny looking pest: the stink bug. Enjoy!
A couple decades ago, you would have no idea what a stink bug was. The only thing you would hear about them is the stories told by your friends who visited Asia and saw these weird-looking and sometimes smelly critters walking around in their native habitat. Well, fast forward a few decades and stink bugs seem to be just about everywhere in the Mid-Atlantic, something you can blame a few hitch-hiking critters on way back when. Stink bugs have now earned the title “invasive species,” and with no natural predators around, can prove to be quite a headache for many homeowners in our region.
Indeed, these critters are social animals, which makes dealing with them a blessing and a curse. It is the former because you won’t need to second-guess yourself that you have an infestation: a tell-tale sign of a stink bug infestation is a large grouping of them on the side of your home. However, dealing with a single stink bug can be a pain, as one misstep and you have a nasty smell lingering around the home for quite some time, so you can imagine the pain if you had to deal with a hundred or more. When times like these come around, it’s better to give the experts a call and let them handle it.
While stink bugs, other than their nasty smell, pose virtually no threat to humans, did you know that they enjoy an omnivore’s diet? Some of their favorite foods include leafy greens (bad news if you’re a gardener), but they are known to snack on other critters should a juicy caterpillar come waltzing along. So, if you find yourself having a green thumb or having a great time as a caterpillar aficionado, it’s better to be safe than sorry and to call in the professionals should you see a bunch of these critters around your home.
Stink bugs are a pest in every sense of the word, but by no means do you have to put up with their shenanigans. If you spot a group of stink bugs in your home, give us a call; in no time, it’ll seem like they were never there in the first place.
