Wacky Pest Wednesday: Silverfish

 In News

Happy Wednesday to all you Tri-County Pest Control fans out there! We’re here to continue our weekly tradition, and we encourage you to join us for our latest edition of Wacky Pest Wednesday, where we cover the silverfish.  Enjoy!

The silverfish is undoubtedly one of the wackiest pests out there.  Coming from the prehistoric era (no, seriously—they’ve been around for 400 million years…100 million years before the dinosaurs!), these critters not only look weird, but behave unlike any other pests.  Thanks to countless eons of evolution, these pests can survive without food for a year, and love to munch on starchy things like glue and cardboard.  This high-carb diet would kill your average human, yet it can sustain a silverfish for quite a while—these suckers can typically live for 8 years.

So, can you expect to find these critters raiding your kid’s arts and crafts box for a quick meal?  Most likely not, as they prefer warm and moist environments that is not well-travelled.  Your basement and bathtub make for perfect nesting locations, perfect for females to lay up to 20 eggs every single day.  These critters breed fairly fast, and even though it will take one 2 years to become an adult, they are still in your home, meaning that they are still a nuisance.

While they are not venomous and are not known to bite, they are still pretty weird to keep around.  Should you find one in your home, you’re probably better off to be safe than sorry by calling us in for a check.  Nothing is a precious as peace of mind, and one call to us is all you need to get it.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, Tri-County Pest Control fans!
