Recipe for a Pest-Free Barbecue

 In News

In our opinion, there are several things that are distinctly American.  From watching fireworks on the Fourth of July to going to Walt Disney World, we do things that make us stand out from the rest of the world. However, we think that there is nothing more American than having a Memorial Day barbecue with your friends and family.  While democracy downers and pests may not be fond of the idea, we’ve collected a few tips on how to keep them from ruining your American spirit, at least on the pest end.

At many Memorial Day barbecues, one of the biggest nuisances of the cookout are mosquitoes, who generally become more active as the night goes on.  Mosquitoes thrive in standing and stagnant water, so make sure to check your yard for both before you start grilling. If you’re not using a pool or hot tub, cover it up. Also, walk around your lawn for any standing water spots, and fill those in with some dirt.

Speaking about grass, tall grass provides excellent cover for pests, such as Japanese beetles and ants. Do yourself a favor and trim that lawn before guests arrive, making sure to cut it short. Less grass will make it harder for pests to blend into the environment, and in turn, make it harder for them to ruin your cookout.

Another big barbecue pest is the ant, as they are bound to come out in numbers once they smell food hitting the ground.  As you’re grilling or eating, be sure to wipe up or wash off any foodstuff that falls on the ground.  The longer the food sits on the ground, all the more likely it is that an army of ants is going to want to join in on the holiday fun.

In light of all of this, however, there can still be large pest threats lurking about…like egg sacs in the vegetation around your yard…that can bring a halt to your barbecue.  Thankfully, there is still enough time to call us to come take a look at your property, as to assure that you will have a pest-free holiday.  Once you make the call to us, you can rest easy, as we’ll handle the rest.

With these tips, we hope that you are ready to battle the pest rush this Memorial Day weekend, and ready to celebrate a classic American holiday.  So long as you’re surrounded by family, friends, and food, it’s sure to be a good time.

From all of us at Tri-County Pest Control, we wish you and your families a fantastic Memorial Day!
